ABC Central Coast (Gosford) Mid Mornings - 01/10/2009 - 11:19 AM Scott Levi Station Ph: 02 4367 1911 Compere says he was very chuffed when Harold Scruby, CEO, Pedestrian Council of Australia, said his favourite walk of all was on the Central Coast in light of National Walk to Work day tomorrow. Scruby and Compere discuss the Oxfam Trail Walk. Scruby says Beyond Blue is a supporter for them this year due to the overwhelming evidence which shows exercise can keep depression away. Scruby gives advice for people walking on how to be safe from traffic, adding that walkers aren't considered by council planners when designing their budgets. Scruby says people should always walk facing the oncoming traffic, and wear high visibility clothing. Scruby says cars dominate lives, and walking is unattractive, as a result Australia is one of the fattest nations in the world. Compeer is extremely critical of the pedestrian crossing lights in Erina, saying the people at the RTA have designed a system which doesn't work. Scruby says the RTA is getting better, but after decades of engineers planning for cars, pedestrians have been left in the lurch Scruby says it will take a long time to get proper pedestrian infrastructure, saying there's 9 Minister for roads and none for footpaths. Compere laments the lack of a national bike strategy. Scruby says Holland's footpath and bike paths have reversed their obesity trend. Compere says the Premier has promised more public transport for the Central Coast, which gets people walking. Scruby says people need to start walking or it's going to cost Australians through health care costs. Scruby talks about the 7 Bridges Walk, saying it's part of Craze, which is put on by the NSW Govt. © Media Monitors 2009 Interviewees: Harold Scruby, CEO, Pedestrian Council of Australia.
