TOMORROW the streets will hopefully be lined with “walking class heroes”.
They'll be voting with their feet for better health on Walk to Work Day, when all Australians are being urged to put on their comfortable shoes, leave the car at home and walk to their place of employment.
An initiative of the Pedestrian Council of Australia, the day is also designed to encourage people to take public transport in combination with walking at least part of the way.
It is the fifth year the special day has been held and the council says: “By pledging to become a `walking class hero' and including a walk in their daily commuting routines, Australians can work towards a healthier heart and a cleaner environment for the whole community.”
According to the council, about 1400 deaths and $76 million in health care costs could be save each year if just 10 per cent of Australian adults walked regularly.
By participating in the day, 25 committed walkers can win a Nokia 7650 mobile phone, which includes a fully integrated digital camera, and a $1000 Telstra Shop gift voucher.
