Organisations from all walks of industry and business are being called upon to register for National Walk to Work Day, an annual event being held on Friday, 2 October 2009 that promotes better health and cleaner air.

And individual staff members are being invited to register as a Walking Class Hero to go in the draw to win a Walking Holiday in New Zealand.

Now in its 7th year as a national initiative, Walk to Work Day encourages Australians to walk all or part of the way to work to improve health and contribute to a cleaner environment.

If you can't walk to work, include a walk at lunch or walk to your first appointment instead of getting a taxi.

Organisations who register as Corporate Ambassadors for National Walk to Work Day are pledging their support;
  • To promote regular walking as a healthy activity (better physical, mental & social health);
  • To reduce reliance on the private motor vehicle (reduce car-dependency);
  • To promote and improve the use of public transport (less traffic); and
  • To improve air quality by reducing unnecessary vehicle emissions (help tackle climate change and reduce global warming).

Organisations who register will receive ideas on how to promote walking to staff, posters and flyers.

Individuals can also pledge their willingness to walk by registering as a Walking Class Hero at www.walk.com.au. By registering, individual Walking Class Heroes can go in the draw to win a walking holiday for two people to New Zealand.

Events will be held in each state and territory, with many Australian businesses celebrating the day by holding a Walk to Work Day Healthy Breakfast. For menus and ideas visit www.walk.com.au
