Forget the car and walk to work

FORGET the car and grab your joggers for this year’s Walk to Work Day on Friday, October 1.

The event is being pushed y the Pedestrian Council of Australia to encourage more people to walk and use public transport.

The year’s slogan is “Unblock some arteries.”

The council’s chairman, Harold Scruby, said the event has enormous long-term benefits.

“It is a most important event because it actually involves and benefits everybody,” Mr Scruby said.

“The four benefits are better health, cleaner air, less traffic and improved transport,” he said.

Major sponsors of the event are the NRMA and RTA, NSW Health, the National Heart Foundation and Active Australia. Australian icon Herb Elliott is leading the charge and will lead a celebrity walk across Sydney Harbour Bridge from Milsons Point walkway to Wynard Park about 8am. There will be free breakfasts organised at both ends of the bridge.

Local councils are supporting the event with many organising breakfasts in their area including North Sydney and Willoughby councils.

Last year’s event attracted thousands of “walking class heroes” across NSW who will be joined by “heroes” from Victoria and the ACT this year. For details call the Pedestrian Council on 9968 4544 or on the PCA website www.walk.com.au
