STEP to it for a healthier life by pulling on your walking shoes for today's Walk to Work day.

The initiative of the Pedestrian Council of Australia, supported by the National Heart Foundation, is designed to raise the importance of walking and using public transport.

Brisbane couple Matthew and Leona Burke began walking to work every day after moving to Fairfield earlier this year. Matthew is a lecturer at the University of Queensland and Leona a nurse at the Princess Alexandra Hospital.

They said that, in addition to economic benefits, walking helped avoid the frustration of traffic snarls.

The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare recommends moderate activity for at least 30 minutes every day.
