VICTORIA PLEDGES TO REALLY STEP IT UP AHEAD OF

NATIONAL WALK TO WORK DAY

With less than two weeks to go until National Walk to Work Day, Victorians have promised to really pound the pavement this year, nominating they will walk a collective 8813 kilometres to mark the day on Friday 1 October.

That’s equal to walking from Melbourne to Sydney return - five times!

Approximately:

0.5km saves half a kilo of harmful greenhouse gases

2.4km across the national icon – the Harbour Bridge

9.4km around the circumference of Uluru

560km English Channel

873km Sydney to Melbourne

1100km from east to west of the Nullarbor

2000km Great Barrier Reef

2310km Australia to NZ

25,760km around Australia’s coastline

40,075km around the equator.

Walking Advocate, Harold Scruby says: “Walking is a wonderful way to get out and about in your city. It’s good for your health and it’s an effective and easy way of getting around.

“Walking to work - or at work - makes you more productive and more creative. And research shows if you walk often, you’re less likely to get ill.”

National Walk to Work Day is designed to encourage organisations to support their employees to build regular walking into their daily routine. There are two ways to get involved:

By registering as a Walking Workplace, organisations of all sizes will receive free information, support and ideas on how they can make walking work in their workplace.

Individuals can show their support by Pledging to Put Their Feet First and walk more regularly. Those who register go in a draw to win one of two walking holidays (one in NZ and the other in Australia) thanks to Wotif.com and Wotflight.com, or a pair of Rockport shoes (RRP approx $200).

Visit walk.com.au to register as a Walking Workplace or to Pledge to Put Your Feet First.
