People in country South Australia are stepping up very strongly in support of national Walk to Work Day this year.
The event is on Friday, 1 October and already 20 workplaces in rural and regional South Australia have registered to take part in the event (as at 20/09/10) out of just over 60 for the whole State.
In addition almost 500 individuals in the State have already pledged to put their feet first with a strong showing among them for country people.
Overall individual South Australians have pledged to walk a combined extra 1600 kms on the day of the event, which is the same as walking from Adelaide to Melbourne and back.
Many country health service establishments are among the Walking Workplaces that have signed up to take part this year, including the Yorke Peninsula Division of General Practice, the Port Pirie Regional Health Service and the Mallee Health Service at Lameroo.
The regional TAFE College at Whyalla Norrie, the Bunnings store at Mount Gambier, and the electorate office of Ivan Venning, MP for Schubert, at Kadina are among the others.
Walking advocate Harold Scruby says: "Walking is a wonderful way to get out and about in your town. It's good for your health and it's an effective and easy way of getting around.
"Walking to work - or at work - makes you more productive and more creative. And research shows if you walk often, you're less likely to get ill."
National Walk to Work Day is designed to encourage organisations to support their employees and build regular walking into their daily routine. There are two ways to get involved:
By registering as a Walking Workplace, organisations of all sizes will receive free information, support and ideas on how they can make walking work in their workplace.
Individuals can show their support by Pledging to Put their Feet First and walking more regularly. Those who register go in a draw to win one of two walking holidays (one in NZ and the other in Australia) thanks to Wotif.com and Wotflight.com or a free pair of Rockport shoes (RRP approx $200).
