The AMA (WA) has backed the State Government's new pedestrian strategy for Perth. State President Dr Rosanna Capolingua-Host spoke of the health benefits of walking at the launch of the strategy in Kings Park on February 29. She joined Transport Minister Murray Griddle and the Chairman of the Pedestrian Council of Australia, Harold Scruby, in a stroll with two "tall walkers" after her presentation. "There are some very real health benefits from walking," Dr Capolingua-Host told the audience, which included the new police Commissioner Barry Matthews. "Just 30 minutes a day of exercise can promote long term health - and walking is one of the best exercises you can get. "Walking at a comfortable speed improves heart-lung function. It is also good for general fitness as well as being safe, cheap and convenient," she said. |
