Take all parking powers from police: Pedestrian CouncilThe Pedestrian Council of Australia says the New South Wales Government's transfer of parking policing to local government does not go far enough.
Local councils will take over the issuing of parking fines from July 28, after a 1999 auditor general's report recommended the transfer. Pedestrian Council chairman Harold Scruby says the auditor general also raised the notion of outsourcing the role of the infringement processing bureau, which has not been acted on. "It's not a police function at all," he said. "It's not a core function of policing. "Police are highly trained individuals and they should be out on the beat. They should not be in offices processing fines." © This work is copyright and is reproduced under licence from
