SALES of 4WDs in NSW have boomed 15 per cent in the past year.
The annual report of the RTA revealed that 359,381 4WDs are now registered in NSW, up from just 118,000 in 2000.
Pedestrian Council of Australia president Harold Scruby said 4WDs were little more than "weapons of mass destruction'".
"They cause an inordinate amount of death, destruction and injury on our roads,'' Mr Scruby said. "The more we can tax them the better off we will all be.''
