Pedestrian suggestion - Car-Free Day for Sydney

The Australian

INDEPENDENTLY minded Clover Moore, Sydney's new lord mayor, may have a stronger impact than most of the suits who inhabit the CBD could imagine. Moore, prompted by Harold Scruby, head of the Pedestrian Council of Australia, is apparently considering holding a car-free day for inner Sydney on the first day of October.

Scruby wants streets closed to private vehicles so city workers can experience the benefits of walking to work. While the Beemer and Merc-driving brigade is unlikely to give much support to the Moore-Scruby idea, Scruby is also lobbying that dedicated bushwalker and lifelong non-driver, NSW Premier Bob Carr, seeking his support for the idea.
