More Speed Cameras - PCA Congratulates NSW Govt

Friday 15 March 2002
The Chairman of the Pedestrian Council of Australia today congratulated the NSW
Government, the RTA and the Minister for Roads and Transport, the Hon Carl
Scully, on their decision to double the number of speed cameras in NSW.

Mr Scruby said: "There are two major killers on our roads - alcohol and speed. There has been a dramatic cultural shift in the community’s attitude to drink-driving over the past decade. It is now considered utterly irresponsible. Speeding is culturally different but equally deadly. Now is the time to make it as socially unacceptable as drink-driving."

"Speed cameras have many benefits. First they are proven to cut the number of motorists speeding in these zones by up to 90%. Secondly, those who continue to speed will be taken off our roads thorough the demerit point system. Thirdly, they employ technology to allow police to optimise the deployment of their scarce resources, so that enforcement is focussed more precisely on other key driver behaviours which contribute to much of our road trauma." Mr Scruby said.
