By Alex Mitchell Police Commissioner Peter Ryan was urged yesterday to start bicycle patrols as part of a crackdown on the dangerous behaviour of bike couriers. The call was made by Pedestrian Council of Australia chairman and chief executive Harold Scruby who described courters as "urban cowboys". "If the police reinstituted the inner-city bicycle patrol it would be a much more effective way of enforcing traffic laws and would be more efficient than using police cars or motorbikes," he said. On Tuesday, the first public demonstration against bicycle couriers will be staged in Martin Place to protest against "the decline in pedestrian safety and freedom of movement" in the CBD. |
