Safety call on crossing ads

ADVERTISING billboards should be removed from the vicinity of zebra crossings to improve safety, a transport lobby group says.

Pedestrian Council of Australia chairman Harold Scruby said pedestrians were being endangered by billboards which blocked footpaths and obstructed motorists' vision.

He said advertisers liked to place scrolling billboards at crossings as motorists would look at the ads while stopped. But Mr Scruby said they were more distracting than traditional billboards.

His comments come as the Government's Staysafe committee holds a two-day conference on driver distraction.
