Students urged to walk safely

SCHOOL SAFETY: Rown Duke, 10, Rachael Fishburn, 11 and Oliver Hall, 5.

PARENTS and children are encouraged to lace up their shoes and leave the car at home for National Walk Safely to School Day this Friday.

The annual community event encourages primary school students to learn how to commute safely to and from school as well as promote general road safety and being active.

One school, which will be participating in this year’s event will be Shailer Park Primary School.

Student Rachael Fisburn, 11, said it was important for all young people to know how to act and behave around busy roads.

"Some ways to walk safely to school are holding hands while crossing the road, not kicking or bouncing balls while you’re near a road," she said.

"It’s also safer to walk home in groups of people."
