Lesson in road safety

The Daily Telegraph

Friday 5 April 2002
THIS morning more than 250,000 children and their parents will leave the car at home and walk to bus stops and schools for the second annual Walk Safely to School Day.

The statewide event is not only aimed at teaching road safety behaviour but also the benefits of walking and regular exercise.

Pedestrian Council of Australia chairman Harold Scruby hopes the event will help make physical activity part of the daily lives of children and their parents.

“It's important to realise Australia is becoming an obese nation and the habit we're sending to children, that going to school in a car is common, is a very bad one.”
