250,000 walk safely

The Daily Telegraph

Saturday 6 April 2002
MORE than 250,000 NSW primary schoolchildren were yesterday given a lesson in pedestrian safety as they took to the pavement for the annual Walk Safely to School Day.

Now in its second year, the day involved participants from several hundred primary schools.
The event is part of a State Government initiative to encourage parents to walk their children to school instead of driving.

The number of students who registered for yesterday's walk had increased by 50 per cent compared with last year, according to Harold Scruby from the Pedestrian Council of Australia.
