PRIMARY school children, parents, carers and schools across the State took part in the second Walk Safely to School Day last Friday.

The event is an initiative of the Pedestrian Council of Australia. It was an opportunity to promote traffic awareness among young students.

More than 20 schools from the Inner West, including Fr John Therry School, Balmain, participated on the day.

Deputy principal Tim Long said it was ``incredibly important'' for students to be educated about road rules.

The school won Leichhardt Council's poster competition to promote the event. Deputy Mayor Jamie Parker presented the school with a cheque for $300 and book vouchers totalling $200 for students with winning entries.
