Alexandria Public School will be one of more than 500 schools across the State taking part in Walk Safely to School Day on Friday, April 5.

In its second year, Walk Safely to School Day encourages primary school children to walk and commute safely to school, promotes the health benefits of walking and helps create regular walking habits at a young age.

The day is an initiative of the Pedestrian Council of Australia and is sponsored by the Motor Accidents Authority NSW, NSW Health, NRMA, Active Australia, Transport NSW and the RTA.

Relieving principal Debra Marks said: “Because we front onto a main road, safety has always been my top priority. You can’t have happy students and positive learning outcomes without safety.

“I am encouraging as many people as possible to walk to school and if students have to catch the bus, to get off the bus two stops earlier to promote a healthy life-style.

“I want to get the message across that it is better to arrive late than not to arrive at all.”

Schools interested in taking part are urged to register online at www.walk.com.au to receive an information kit.
