Walk day to protect kids

ELIMINATING death and injury of young pedestrians on NSW roads is the aim of Walk Safely to School Day on Friday.

From 1996 to 2000 more than 1,700 child pedestrians aged 5-12 years, were killed or injured on NSW roads.

Pedestrian Council of Australia chairman Harold Scruby said: “That's a staggering amount of kids that have been hit and we want to cut that down to nil. No child under 10 should cross the road unless holding the hand of an adult.”

The objective of the day is to help young children learn to safely cross the road and to promote the healthy benefits of walking.

More than 700 schools have registered to take part in the day which is being held for the second year
