Australians are being encouraged to walk to work today and the campaign is being headed up by the Prime Minister.
Walk to Work Day has been organised by the Pedestrian Council of Australia.
Council chairman Harold Scruby says there are many benefits like better health, cleaner air and less traffic.
Mr Scruby says 40 per cent of Australians are obese and walking is one of the best and safest forms of exercise.
He says the campaign is in its sixth year but for the first time is truly national, following help from the Federal Government.
"We are very, very grateful and we are just as grateful for the Prime Minister for being the Walking Class Hero this year, no-one doubts that he is a walker of great repute and the slogan this year is 'Make Time To Walk More'," Mr Scruby said.
