IN her role as the good witch in the smash hit play Wicked, Lucy Durack gets around by floating in a giant bubble.

But Durack's career requires a lot of physical activity and now she's calling on other West Australians to incorporate exercise into their routine.

The Perth-born star is an ambassador for Friday's Walk to Work Day, an annual charity event that this year will raise funds for the Cancer Council.

Australian Bureau of Statistics data show 70 per cent of Australian adults take little exercise.

Durack said that walking to work was an easy and simple way to incorporate physical activity into your daily routine.

"If you get out in the fresh air then you're going to feel calmer and you're likely to have a better day at work," she said.

Cancer Council state nutrition and physical activity manager Steve Pratt said daily exercise helped prevent some cancers.

"People should try to work up to doing 30 minutes or more of vigorous activity or 60 minutes or more of moderate activity such as brisk walking every day," Mr Pratt said.

Durack performs in Wicked for the last time at Burswood tonight.
