WEST Launceston Primary School children will join thousands of students around Australia today and take part in the Walk Safely to School Day.

About 250 West Launceston pupils, of the total school population of 300, will walk the whole or part of the way to school.

Teacher and school event organiser Davin Broomhill said that West Launceston was a regular participant in the event.

``We try and promote a healthy lifestyle to our students but one of the other reasons is the traffic congestion because we're located on the main road to the basin,'' Mr Broomhill said.

``So we do encourage parents to park a little further away and to walk their children the rest of the way to school.''

Mr Broomhill said that the event also saw teachers remind children about road safety.
Walk Safely to School Day is supported by the Pedestrian Council of Australia, which aims to encourage more people to walk and also promote the need for continued pedestrian safety.
